Australian Partner Visa

Are you in a relationship with an Australian citizen, Australian visa holder or New Zealand citizen?

The Australian government recognises the married, unmarried and same sex relationships of those people with a partner who has the right to reside in Australia. The Australian Partner Visa is open to those people who can provide evidence that the relationship is exclusive to all others, ongoing for the foreseeable future and in the case of unmarried partners has subsisted akin to marriage for at least the preceding 12 months.

There are 2 main types of partner visa – either permanent, which is granted to married couples or those in a relationship for more than three years or provisional which is a temporary visa that will lead to permanent residency provided the relationship is continuing, two years later when the provisional visa comes up for renewal.

Although the visa is usually for partners of Australian citizens or permanent residents, there are also options available to partners of New Zealand citizens wishing to relocate to Australia. In addition to visas for married and de facto relationships there are specific fiancé visas for those couples who are engaged and may not have spent the requisite time living together to apply for the partner visa.

These visa applications are lodged to the Australian visa processing centre’s in your local area. Applications take approximately 6 months to process from date of lodgement. Visa applications that are incomplete when lodged or that have requests made by the Australian authorities will result in a slower processing time.
