UK Sporting Events
The UK is home to some of the
world’s most iconic sporting events. The English Premier League is arguably the world’s most competitive football league and along with County Cricket and Premiership Rugby, the UK attracts many of the world’s top sportspeople.
These mainstream leagues aside, there are a handful of must-see UK sporting events:
- Find the perfect spot along the River Thames in London and watch the Oxford-Cambridge University Boat Race in late March/early April.
- Experience the romance of the FA cup final in May and be part of one of football’s most internationally renowned events.
- And then, for something completely different, watch the World Naked Bike ride in June. It takes place in 7 different UK cities.
- For a true British summer experience, you can't beat the excitement and tantrums of the tennis at Wimbledon in June
- Also in June, the Royal Ascot combines horses, elegant style and champagne. The Queen is perhaps the most notable regular attendee and she is joined by an estimated 300 000 other visitors.
Must-see UK Festivals
Chase the Cheese
If you want to be involved in or just see something weird and wonderful don't miss the historic Coopers Hill Cheese Rolling Festival. This UK festival at the end of May involves hundreds of people (a large number of them are Australian) throwing themselves down an extremely steep hill after a wheel of cheese.
Stop to Smell the Roses
For something a little tamer and with less chance of injury, the Chelsea Flower Show at London's Royal Hospital is a nice alternative. This, the world’s most famous flower festival, takes place in May.
Enjoy the Music
For your chance to see some of music's finest, get along to the famous Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts. One of the oldest music festivals anywhere, this historic event happens in June but be warned, tickets sell out long before then.
Unleash the artist within
For your creative fix, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August is something you won't soon forget. Established in 1947, it is today the world’s largest arts festival.
Get Festive
Celebrate the end of the year, raise money for charity and help welcome the Festive season by donning a Santa suit and joining hundreds of others complete in the
Santa fun run in Devon.
